GORYEB CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL: PEDIATRIC SEPSIS RESEARCH AND NEW TRAINING TO SAVE LIVES
Thanks to the continued support of the R Baby Foundation Goryeb Children’s Hospital has made significant progress in developing and implementing a dedicated pediatric sepsis program. Despite the pandemic, they’ve made excellent progress in sepsis data collection with over 40 variables per patient to reduce the time from diagnosis to intervention and reducing the time from recognition of potentially septic patients to administration of IV antibiotics from 154 minutes to 113 minutes and reduced the number of days patients remain on antibiotics from 18 days to 9 days. In addition to the critical training and education R Baby funds, we provided additional support to meet the unique needs of the pandemic.
Goryeb Children’s Hospital has been collecting and submitting data to a national collaborative called Improving Pediatric Sepsis Outcomes (IPSO) since 2017. IPSO is focused on 5 key processes and bundle compliance. These key processes have been proven to decrease mortality and improve outcomes in pediatric sepsis. Of the 5 key processes, Goryeb Children’s Hospital has shown improvement in 3, namely: sepsis trigger activation, sepsis huddle activation and sepsis order set utilization. With the help of R Baby Foundation, they will continue this improvement, and work on the remaining 2 other measures: time to first fluid bolus and time to first antibiotic.
